ABOUT
Appalachia is a region plagued by poverty, environmental issues and stereotypes, but it is strong in pride and culture. The effort in this T-shirt campaign is to encourage pride of the historical and cultural identity of Appalachia, as well as awareness of the social, political and environmental issues facing the region. (This does include but is not limited to coal and mountain top removal.)

I concepted and designed this shirt in 2007 while living in the southern coalfields of my home state of West Virginia. I was there completing a documentary photography project on families and community, and felt a strong sense of pride from those I met and in myself. So I wanted to kickstart a campaign that showed off that pride, encouraged pride in others and created dialogue.

Whether you arecurrently living or used to live in Appalachia, your family is from there, you have friends there, or you concern yourself with its social justice struggles, I hope you will support this campaign and Appalachian awareness.

THE DESIGN
Based on the iconic Che Guevara graphic and Spanish-language slogan, my intention was never to plan a Cuba-like revolution. The recognizable style was highjacked merely for pop culture's sake.

All shirts are limited edition on different colors per edition. Shirts are screened by fellow Appalachians at Mammoth Printshop in Auburn, Alabama, and are on American Apparel.

The campaign began in 2007, and has existed strictly as a Facebook gaining 600 group members through word of mouth. The shirt is in its third edition and more than 150 shirts have been sold around the United States and the world.
